Bike Engine Power Converter: BHP, PS and kW

Home > Calculators converters for bikes In India > Bike Engine Power Converter: BHP, PS and kW
You can quickly convert bike power between BHP, PS, and kW. Just enter a value in any of the three boxes, and the other two will show the equivalent power.

This converter uses BHP as mechanical horsepower and PS as metric horsepower. Make sure to use the unit listed in your motorcycle’s specifications when you enter a value.

Just enter the number for the power value, including decimals if needed. For example, if your bike’s spec says “25 PS at 10,000 rpm,” type 25 in the PS box. The other fields will update on their own. Click Reset to clear all three boxes.

Quick Reference: Bhp To Ps And Kw Conversion Table

Check this table for common power values if you don’t want to use the converter.

BHP PS kW
1 BHP 1.01 PS 0.75 kW
5 BHP 5.07 PS 3.73 kW
10 BHP 10.14 PS 7.46 kW
20 BHP 20.28 PS 14.91 kW
50 BHP 50.69 PS 37.28 kW
100 BHP 101.39 PS 74.57 kW

All numbers are rounded to two decimal places. For other values, use the converter above.

What Do Ps, Bhp And Kw Mean?

Before you enter a value, check if your motorcycle’s specs list power in PS, BHP, or kW. The definitions below show how these terms are used here.

Ps (pferdestärke)

  1. PS stands for Pferdestärke, German for “horse strength” or metric horsepower.
  2. It is a metric power unit equivalent to approximately 98.6% of one mechanical horsepower (HP).
  3. PS is commonly used in European countries to denote the power output of engines and is often seen in vehicles imported from European manufacturers.

Bhp (brake Horsepower)

If your power is given in BHP, enter it in the BHP box. This tool treats BHP as mechanical horsepower. Changing to PS or kW only changes the unit, not the rear-wheel power.

Hp Vs Bhp: What’s The Difference?

HP stands for horsepower, which is a unit of power. BHP means brake horsepower, measured with a brake dynamometer. In most motorcycle specs, BHP refers to the engine’s output at the crankshaft, not at the rear wheel.
HP doesn’t always mean theoretical or gross power. There isn’t a set percentage difference between HP and BHP just because the names are different.
This converter uses BHP as mechanical horsepower. If your motorcycle’s specs only say “HP,” check which type the manufacturer means. Put mechanical horsepower in the BHP box and metric horsepower in the PS box.

Kw (kilowatts)

A kilowatt (kW) is 1,000 watts and is part of the International System of Units (SI). If your power is given in kilowatts, enter it in the kW box.

Conversion Between Motorcycle Power Units

Here are the formulas to convert between BHP, PS, and kW. This tool uses BHP as mechanical horsepower and PS as metric horsepower.

  1. BHP to kW: Multiply BHP by 0.745699872.
  2. kW to BHP: Divide kW by 0.745699872.
  3. PS to kW: Multiply PS by 0.73549875.
  4. kW to PS: Divide kW by 0.73549875.
  5. BHP to PS: Multiply BHP by 0.745699872, then divide by 0.73549875.
  6. PS to BHP: Multiply PS by 0.73549875, then divide by 0.745699872.

Keep the full value during your calculation and only round to two decimal places at the end. This helps avoid small errors from rounding too early.

Worked Examples: Converting Bhp, Ps And Kw

These examples use the same conversion factors as the calculator. Each result is worked out from the original number and rounded to two decimal places.

Example 1: Convert 20 Bhp To Ps And Kw

  • BHP to PS: 20 × 0.745699872 ÷ 0.73549875 ≈ 20.28 PS.
  • BHP to kW: 20 × 0.745699872 ≈ 14.91 kW.

Example 2: Convert 25 Ps To Bhp And Kw

  • PS to BHP: 25 × 0.73549875 ÷ 0.745699872 ≈ 24.66 BHP.
  • PS to kW: 25 × 0.73549875 ≈ 18.39 kW.

Example 3: Convert 12 Kw To Bhp And Ps

  • kW to BHP: 12 ÷ 0.745699872 ≈ 16.09 BHP.
  • kW to PS: 12 ÷ 0.73549875 ≈ 16.31 PS.

Each example shows the same power in different units. A bigger number in PS doesn’t mean more power than the same value in BHP or kW.

Bike Power Converter Faqs

1. How Do I Compare Bike Specifications Quoted In Ps, Bhp And Kw?

Convert both bikes’ power numbers to the same unit before you compare them. Enter each value in the right box—PS, BHP, or kW—then compare the results in the unit you prefer. Always check the manufacturer’s specs, since not every model from a brand uses the same unit.

2. Does Higher Ps/bhp/kw Always Mean Better Bike Performance?

More power usually means better performance, but not always. Things like torque (which affects how strongly a bike pulls), engine tuning, and the bike’s design also matter a lot. Knowing about these factors can help you choose the right motorcycle.

3. Can I Enter Decimal Power Values?

Yes, you can. Just type a decimal value, like 20.2, in the right box—BHP, PS, or kW. Only enter the number, not the unit or rpm. The other two boxes will update automatically, and the converter rounds results to two decimal places.

4. Why Do Some Results Show Fewer Than Two Decimal Places?

The converter rounds results to two decimal places and drops extra zeroes. For example, 20.00 shows as 20, and 20.50 shows as 20.5. The number you enter stays the same in its box.

5. How Do I Clear The Converter And Start Again?

Click Reset to clear all three boxes and the last conversion. Then enter a new value in any box—BHP, PS, or kW. You can also pick a preset example to see a new conversion without resetting first.

6. Is Hp The Same As Bhp On A Motorcycle Specification Sheet?

Sometimes, manufacturers use HP and BHP for the same crankshaft power, but HP by itself doesn’t tell you how it was measured. Always check the manufacturer’s specs before converting. This tool uses BHP as mechanical horsepower and PS as metric horsepower.
