Long story short: Comparing the costs of electric and petrol scooters involves more than just looking at electricity and petrol expenses. You also need to factor in the purchase price, insurance, maintenance, tyre replacements, charging costs, and how long you plan to own the scooter.
This article breaks down these costs with a real-world example from Delhi, comparing the Honda Activa 110 STD and a specific Ather 450X model, both assumed to be ridden 10,000 km per year. The numbers show how to compare costs, but they are not universal prices or guaranteed savings for every scooter, city, or rider.
Key Takeaways
- Compare more than fuel costs: An electric scooter vs petrol scooter cost comparison should include purchase expenditure, energy, insurance, maintenance, replacement tyres and your expected ownership period.
- Petrol has the lower upfront cost in this example: The Honda Activa 110 STD purchase estimate is ₹87,739, compared with the selected Ather 450X configurator’s on-road estimate of ₹1,30,140—a difference of ₹42,401.
- Ownership duration changes the result: At 10,000 km per year, the Activa’s expenditure subtotal is ₹20,558 lower in the first year. The Ather’s subtotal is ₹22,126 lower over three years and ₹64,810 lower over five years.
- Usage and efficiency affect recovery time: Under the stated petrol, electricity, and efficiency assumptions, the Ather recovers its higher purchase expenditure through energy savings alone after approximately 21,400 km, or 26 months at 10,000 km per year. This is not a complete ownership-cost break-even calculation.
- Treat the figures as a worked example, not guaranteed savings: Maintenance uses budgeting allowances, specified additional expenses are excluded, and no resale proceeds are deducted. Use your own quotations, riding distance, and charging costs before deciding.
Electric Scooter Vs Petrol Scooter: What Costs Should You Compare?
Make sure you use the same ownership period and riding distance when comparing both scooters. Begin with similar purchase quotes, then add the costs you’ll pay during ownership. Separate confirmed prices from estimates, and clearly note any charges you’re leaving out.
- Purchase expenditure: Compare selected variants, initial insurance, taxes, registration-related charges and any separately payable equipment or installation.
- Energy expenses: Calculate petrol or charging costs using expected distance, efficiency and applicable energy prices.
- Maintenance: Include scheduled servicing, labour, consumables and separately payable scheduled replacements.
- Tyres and batteries: Account for replacement purchases separately unless already included in another budget.
- Later expenses: Include applicable insurance renewals, finance charges, subscriptions and other ownership expenses.
- Resale: If comparing expenditure after selling, deduct an explicitly stated resale estimate for each scooter. Otherwise label the results as expenditure before resale.
Just having a lower energy cost per kilometre doesn’t automatically mean lower overall ownership costs. You also need to look at the difference in purchase price and other expenses. The example below shows how to do this comparison.
Electric Scooter Vs Petrol Scooter Cost Comparison: A Worked Example
To show how the calculation works, the next sections compare the Honda Activa 110 STD petrol scooter and the chosen Ather 450X electric scooter in Delhi over one, three, and five years. The example assumes you ride 10,000 km per year and keeps energy prices, efficiency, and maintenance costs the same throughout.
This comparison looks at the Honda Activa 110 STD and a specific Ather 450X setup with a 126-km range option in Cosmic Black for New Delhi. The range shown is not a verified real-world figure. Details like battery capacity and whether a charger is included are not provided in the summary.
1. Ex-showroom Price, Gst And Subsidies
| Model | Manufacturer-displayed price input | Selected location |
|---|---|---|
| Honda Activa 110 STD | ₹76,358 | New Delhi |
| Ather 450X | ₹1,22,046 | New Delhi |
The manufacturer price labels are reproduced as displayed. The Ather summary does not itemise any incentive or discount behind its effective ex-showroom amount; no additional subsidy or discount is deducted.
The price inputs were recorded from the manufacturers’ official websites in October 2026. The Honda Activa 110 page displays ₹76,358 ex-showroom Delhi for the STD variant. With New Delhi selected, the Ather configurator displays a 450X effective ex-showroom price of ₹1,22,046.
The selected Cosmic Black configuration has no colour surcharge. Its effective ex-showroom price is ₹1,22,046. Some other colours add ₹1,000. The screenshot shows New Delhi, a 126-km range option, and an included three-year battery warranty; it does not show battery capacity (kWh), charger inclusion, or detailed warranty terms.
Confirm the Ather battery variant, included equipment, incentive treatment and separately payable charges before finalising the purchase subtotal. Do not add a charge again if it is already included in the configured price.
Price Difference Used In This Comparison
The Ather 450X effective ex-showroom input of ₹1,22,046 is ₹45,688 higher than the Honda Activa 110 STD ex-showroom Delhi input of ₹76,358. This compares the manufacturer-displayed inputs with their respective labels, not matched final on-road quotations.
Gst Treatment
The applicable vehicle GST categories used for this explanation are listed below. The Honda Activa 110 falls within the petrol two-wheeler category up to and including 350cc, while the Ather 450X is an electric two-wheeler.
| Vehicle category | GST rate | Relevance to this comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol/diesel two-wheelers up to and including 350cc | 18% | Honda Activa 110 |
| Motorcycles above 350cc | 40% | Included for context; neither scooter in this comparison falls in this category. |
| Electric two-wheelers | 5% | Ather 450X |
Official references: The PIB factsheet published on 20 September 2025 explains the reduction from 28% to 18% for two-wheelers up to and including 350cc. The CBIC goods-rate table, Schedule I, entry 242A lists electrically operated vehicles at 5% GST. That CBIC compilation is dated 1 April 2023.
Supplementary reference: BUSY’s guide to GST on bikes and two-wheelers lists the 18%, 40% and 5% categories and associates the revised petrol/diesel motorcycle rates with 22 September 2025. BUSY is a secondary explanatory source, not the legal rate notification.
This comparison uses the displayed manufacturer price inputs rather than calculating vehicle prices from pre-tax amounts. Do not add GST again to an ex-showroom price that already includes it.
GST is separate from government purchase subsidies, state road tax and registration charges. Identify any applicable incentive or exemption separately, and do not deduct a benefit twice if it is already reflected in the displayed price.
Subsidies And Promotional Benefits
- This comparison does not deduct a separate purchase subsidy unless its applicability and amount are confirmed in the current quotation.
- Confirm whether the Ather’s displayed starting price already includes any government incentive or promotional benefit. Do not deduct the same benefit twice.
- Show any separately applicable government purchase incentive as its own line item, with the scheme name, eligibility conditions and quotation date.
- Record manufacturer or dealer discounts separately from government subsidies.
2. Registration Fees
Parivahan lists a standard registration fee of ₹300 for motorcycles. An additional ₹200 applies when the registration certificate is issued as a smart card in Form 23A. Battery-operated vehicles are exempt from the specified registration-certificate and registration-mark fees under G.S.R. 525(E), dated 2 August 2021.
| Charge | Petrol example: Honda Activa 110 STD | Electric example: Ather 450X |
|---|---|---|
| Base registration fee | ₹300 | No separate amount added; see the ₹530 combined line where applicable. Specified EV registration fees are exempt. |
| Smart-card registration certificate | Additional ₹200, where applicable | Confirm any separately applicable charge with the registering authority |
These figures are not the complete RTO bill. State road tax and any other applicable charges must be shown separately. Do not treat a dealer’s combined “RTO charges” amount as the registration fee alone.
Sources: The Parivahan fee schedule lists the ₹300 motorcycle registration fee and the additional ₹200 charge for a smart-card registration certificate where applicable. The separate government announcement concerning G.S.R. 525(E), dated 2 August 2021 explains the specified registration-fee exemption for battery-operated vehicles. Do not interpret this as an exemption from every registration-related charge or state road tax.
3. Road Tax In Delhi
This comparison assumes private registration in Delhi. Road tax is included once in the on-road purchase price and is not multiplied by the number of ownership years.
| Model | Road-tax treatment | Amount used and charge basis |
|---|---|---|
| Honda Activa 110 | 6% of the ₹76,358 ex-showroom price | ₹4,581 |
| Ather 450X | EV exemption subject to applicable rules; configurator separately shows a combined charge | ₹530 combined road tax & registration; not itemised |
The Activa road-tax estimate is ₹76,358 × 6% = ₹4,581.48, rounded to ₹4,581. Confirm the assessed amount. The Ather purchase calculation separately includes the ₹530 combined road-tax-and-registration line shown in the configurator; it does not assign that entire charge to road tax.
Road tax is separate from registration fees, insurance and other applicable charges. These Delhi figures should not be applied to registrations in other states.
The Activa uses an estimated 6% road-tax input. For the Ather, the configurator shows ₹530 under a combined “Road tax & registration” heading; the screenshot doesn’t identify the components. This combined amount is included once in the purchase calculation. Check the Delhi Transport Department information and an itemised quotation before presenting individual charges as final.
4. Insurance: Coverage And Estimated Initial Premiums
Insurance costs should be compared using equivalent coverage. IRDAI’s Master Circular regarding Motor Insurance products, reference IRDAI/NL/CIR/MOT/144/06/2020 dated 8 June 2020, specifies five-year third-party insurance for new two-wheelers and describes a bundled option combining five-year third-party cover with one-year own-damage cover.
This comparison assumes that bundled structure for both scooters. Five-year third-party cover must not be confused with five years of own-damage cover.
| Insurance component | Petrol example: Honda Activa 110 STD | Electric example: Ather 450X |
|---|---|---|
| Initial premium: Activa illustrative / Ather approximate | ₹6,500 | ₹7,564 |
| Assumed third-party coverage — modelling assumption, not confirmed policy contents | 5 years | 5 years |
| Assumed own-damage coverage — modelling assumption, not confirmed policy contents | 1 year | 1 year |
| Later own-damage premiums | Not included | Not included |
| Third-party premiums after the initial five-year term | Not included | Not included |
How These Insurance Figures Are Used
The Activa insurance figure of ₹6,500 is an illustrative budget. The Ather figure of ₹7,564 is the approximate premium displayed in the configurator. The assumed five-year third-party and one-year own-damage structure is used for modelling; the screenshot does not confirm the policy contents, add-ons, deductibles or personal-accident cover. Obtain comparable itemised insurance quotations before treating the two premiums as equivalent.
Each initial insurance budget is included once in the corresponding purchase subtotal. It is not added again when calculating the ownership subtotals.
The ownership calculations exclude subsequent own-damage premiums and any third-party premiums payable after the initial five-year term. The multi-year figures should therefore be read as estimated expenditure subtotals, not all-inclusive ownership costs.
What To Check Before Purchase
Obtain itemised quotations for both scooters and compare the coverage periods, insured declared value, deductibles, add-ons and final payable premiums consistently. Replace the illustrative budgets with those quotations when calculating your own purchase expenditure.
Source: IRDAI: Master Circular regarding Motor Insurance products, dated 8 June 2020, reference IRDAI/NL/CIR/MOT/144/06/2020 (PDF; third-party-hosted copy). The coverage explanation refers to this circular; confirm applicable requirements and the selected policy’s terms when purchasing.
5. Estimated On-road Price In Delhi
The Activa purchase subtotal uses the price, estimated road tax, registration fee and illustrative insurance budget listed below. The Ather figure uses the configurator’s displayed on-road estimate, including its approximate insurance premium and combined road-tax-and-registration charge. These use different evidence bases and do not match final dealer quotations.
| Price component | Petrol example: Honda Activa 110 STD | Electric example: Ather 450X |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer-displayed vehicle price input | ₹76,358 — ex-showroom Delhi | ₹1,22,046 — effective ex-showroom |
| Road tax / combined road tax and registration charge | ₹4,581 | ₹530 — combined configurator line; breakdown unconfirmed |
| Base registration fee | ₹300 | No separate amount added; see the ₹530 combined line where applicable. Specified EV registration fees are exempt. |
| Initial insurance: Activa budget / Ather approximate configurator premium | ₹6,500 | ₹7,564 |
| Estimated purchase subtotal before additional applicable charges | ₹87,739 | ₹1,30,140 |
The Ather subtotal already includes the ₹530 combined road tax and registration charge from the configurator. Don’t add any charge that’s already covered by this amount. For both scooters, only add costs like smart-card, number plate, hypothecation, accessories, charger, installation, or optional plans if they apply separately and aren’t already included. Always check the detailed breakdown before buying.
No separate government purchase subsidy has been deducted. Confirm whether the Ather’s quoted starting price already includes any incentive before making an additional deduction.
Use dated, itemised Delhi dealer quotations for the exact variants to finalise both on-road prices. Count the purchase price once in each ownership-cost calculation; do not add its included road tax, registration fee or initial insurance premium again.
6. Battery Life, Warranty And Replacement Costs
Battery warranty and battery life are different things. Don’t assume you need to replace a battery just because its warranty has ended. Base replacement on the battery’s condition, performance, and the manufacturer’s diagnostics.
| Battery consideration | Petrol example: Honda Activa 110 STD | Electric example: Ather 450X |
|---|---|---|
| Battery type being compared | Low-voltage starter battery | High-voltage traction battery used to power the scooter |
| Replacement timing | Based on battery condition and testing, not automatically after three years. | Based on battery health, faults and usable range, not automatically after five years. |
| Replacement price | Obtain a current quotation for the compatible battery, including fitting and applicable taxes. | Obtain a current authorised-service quotation for the selected battery pack, including labour and applicable taxes. |
| Treatment in this cost comparison | No paid replacement is included in the baseline. Add any replacement expense if incurred. | No paid replacement is included in the baseline. Add any replacement expense if incurred. |
The chosen Ather setup comes with a three-year battery warranty, according to the configurator summary. However, the screenshot doesn’t mention any distance limit, battery health requirements, or specific exclusions. Be sure to read the warranty document for these details and see if you need extra protection from an extended warranty plan.
No paid battery replacement is included in the baseline ownership subtotals. This is a modelling assumption, not a guarantee that either scooter’s battery will last throughout the ownership period. No separate priced replacement scenario is presented because a verified replacement quotation is not available.
7. Tyre Replacement Costs And Assumptions
This comparison uses listed retail prices for a selected replacement front-and-rear tyre combination. The Activa Standard requires a 90/90-12 54J tubeless front tyre and a 90/100-10 53J tubeless rear tyre. Ather’s official specifications list a 90/90-12 tubeless front tyre and a 100/80-12 tubeless rear tyre for the 450X.
| Tyre component | Petrol example: Honda Activa 110 STD | Electric example: Ather 450X |
|---|---|---|
| Selected front tyre | CEAT Milaze X5, 90/90-12 54J, tubeless | CEAT Milaze X5, 90/90-12 54J, tubeless |
| Listed front tyre price | ₹1,450 | ₹1,450 |
| Selected rear tyre | CEAT Milaze, 90/100-10 53J, tubeless | CEAT Zoom X3, 100/80-12 56L, tubeless |
| Listed rear tyre price | ₹1,148 | ₹2,149 |
| Tyre-purchase cost per replacement pair | ₹2,598 | ₹3,599 |
Price references:Tyremarket’s CEAT Milaze X5 front-tyre listing, Tyremarket’s Activa rear-tyre listing and Tyresnmore’s CEAT Zoom X3 tubeless listing. Prices were checked on 28 October 2026 and may change.
Ather size reference: Ather’s official 450-series specifications. Confirm the full tyre specification and application for the exact vehicle before purchase.
These are tyre-purchase prices, not all-inclusive fitted quotations. Any separately payable delivery, fitting, valve or other charges are excluded. The selected products are replacement-price examples, not a claim that they are the scooters’ original-equipment tyres.
Replacement Interval Used For Budgeting
This model assumes you’ll replace both tyres every 20,000 km, even if you hit that distance right at the end of your ownership. This is just a budgeting guideline, not an exact tyre-life figure or a recommendation from the manufacturer.
The original tyres supplied with the scooter are included in its purchase price. Only replacement purchases are added below. Front and rear tyres are budgeted together for simplicity; actual replacement timing may differ.
Tyre Costs At 10,000 Km Per Year
| Ownership period | Distance travelled | Replacement pairs counted | Petrol example: Honda Activa 110 STD | Electric example: Ather 450X |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 10,000 km | 0 | ₹0 | ₹0 |
| 3 years | 30,000 km | 1 | ₹2,598 | ₹3,599 |
| 5 years | 50,000 km | 2 | ₹5,196 | ₹7,198 |
Tyre prices are kept the same in these examples, but your actual replacement costs may be different. Don’t wait to replace your tyres just to match the model’s suggested interval—replace them when needed.
8. Maintenance Costs And Budget Assumptions
This comparison uses annual maintenance allowances of ₹4,000 for the Honda Activa 110 and ₹2,000 for the Ather 450X at 10,000 km per year. Published service-cost references provide context, but neither amount is a verified annual quotation for the selected scooter and usage pattern.
| Maintenance budget | Petrol example: Honda Activa 110 STD | Electric example: Ather 450X |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year — 10,000 km | ₹4,000 | ₹2,000 |
| 3 years — 30,000 km | ₹12,000 | ₹6,000 |
| 5 years — 50,000 km | ₹20,000 | ₹10,000 |
Maintenance Cost References
Ride N Repair’s service-cost guide lists Activa 6G/125 general servicing at ₹700–₹1,200 at authorised centres in its model-wise table. Its separate annual example estimates ₹3,800–₹5,500 for an Activa 125 travelling 8,000 km per year. This is third-party context, not a Honda quotation for the Activa 110 used here.
Ather’s official service guide recommends periodic servicing every 5,000 km or six months and states that standard periodic-service labour starts at ₹550 plus GST. Parts and additional replacement labour can increase the bill; this is not an all-inclusive service price.
If you ride 10,000 km per year, the Ather would need two regular services each year. The ₹2,000 yearly budget is just an estimate and may not cover every part or scheduled replacement.
Scheduled Replacements At The Five-year Endpoint
Ather’s published checklist lists drive-belt inspection every 5,000 km and replacement at 50,000 km, which is the endpoint of this article’s five-year scenario. Confirm the applicable vehicle-specific schedule and quotation to determine whether the cumulative maintenance allowance covers that work. Do not add it twice if already covered; otherwise add the separately payable expense and update the subtotals. Tyres and battery replacement remain separate.
What The Maintenance Budget Includes
The annual allowance is intended to cover routine scheduled servicing, associated labour and minor service consumables applicable to the selected scooter. Use the manufacturer’s service schedule and itemised service quotations to check whether the allowance is sufficient.
What The Maintenance Budget Excludes
- Tyre purchases and fitting costs, which are budgeted separately.
- Battery replacement, which is excluded from the baseline. Any replacement expense must be added separately if incurred.
- Petrol, charging and insurance expenses, which have separate cost categories.
- Accident repairs, major component failures and other unscheduled repairs.
- Optional subscriptions, accessories and extended-warranty plans.
If a prepaid service plan is already included in the purchase price, do not count its covered services again. Add only maintenance expenses payable separately by the owner, and identify any plan exclusions.
To keep things simple, this calculation uses the same maintenance budget each year. In reality, your spending may change from year to year. When you have actual service records or quotes for your scooter, use those numbers and update all the cost tables accordingly.
9. Petrol And Electricity Costs In Delhi
This comparison uses a reported Delhi petrol price of ₹102.12 per litre as of 28 October 2026. For home charging, it uses a domestic base-tariff scenario of ₹6.50 per kWh, corresponding to the 401–800 units per month consumption slab. This electricity figure is not an all-inclusive rate applicable to every Delhi household.
The calculation assumes 10,000 km of riding per year, petrol mileage of 47 km per litre, and electricity consumption of 2.9 kWh per 100 km measured at the wall. The efficiency figures are illustrative assumptions, not independently verified test results for the selected variants.
| Calculation input or result | Petrol example: Honda Activa 110 STD | Electric example: Ather 450X |
|---|---|---|
| Annual distance | 10,000 km | 10,000 km |
| Assumed efficiency or consumption | 47 km per litre | 2.9 kWh per 100 km at the wall |
| Energy price used | ₹102.12 per litre | ₹6.50 per kWh — domestic base-tariff scenario |
| Calculated annual consumption | Approximately 212.77 litres | 290 kWh |
| Calculated energy cost per kilometre | Approximately ₹2.17 | Approximately ₹0.19, before applicable electricity adjustments |
| Calculated annual energy cost | Approximately ₹21,728 | ₹1,885, before applicable electricity adjustments |
Honda Activa 110: Petrol Cost Calculation
- Annual petrol consumption = 10,000 km ÷ 47 km per litre = approximately 212.77 litres.
- Annual petrol cost = (10,000 ÷ 47) × ₹102.12 = approximately ₹21,728.
- Petrol cost per kilometre = ₹102.12 ÷ 47 = approximately ₹2.17.
Petrol-price reference: The Economic Times’ Delhi petrol-price tracker. The model uses the recorded input of ₹102.12 per litre for 28 October 2026 and holds it constant. The assumed mileage is a separate modelling input.
Ather 450x: Home-charging Cost Calculation
- Annual electricity consumption = (10,000 ÷ 100) × 2.9 = 290 kWh.
- Annual base electricity charge = 290 × ₹6.50 = ₹1,885.
- Base electricity cost per kilometre = ₹1,885 ÷ 10,000 = ₹0.1885, or approximately ₹0.19.
The 2.9 kWh per 100 km figure already includes charging losses for this calculation. This number is not the battery’s capacity. Don’t add extra charging losses to this input.
Electricity-rate source: BillUnits’ Delhi electricity tariff table lists ₹6.50 per kWh as the domestic base energy rate for the 401–800-unit monthly consumption slab. This is a secondary reference from an independent calculator website, not an official tariff notification. Confirm the applicable tariff schedule, effective date and current billing adjustments with your electricity distribution company.
Why Your Actual Home-charging Bill May Differ
This scenario prices all 290 annual charging units at ₹6.50 per kWh before billing adjustments. Actual additional expenditure depends on existing household consumption, the slabs into which charging units fall, applicable adjustments and subsidy treatment.
The ₹1,885 annual figure is a base-energy estimate, not a complete charging bill. Compare the household bill with and without the scooter’s additional consumption using the applicable distribution company’s billing rules.
Add separately payable charging-related fixed charges, public-charging fees, subscriptions, charger purchase and installation expenses.
Energy Costs Over 1, 3 And 5 Years
| Ownership period | Total distance | Honda Activa 110 petrol cost | Ather 450X base electricity charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 10,000 km | ₹21,728 | ₹1,885 |
| 3 years | 30,000 km | ₹65,183 | ₹5,655 |
| 5 years | 50,000 km | ₹1,08,638 | ₹9,425 |
These estimates keep petrol prices, electricity rates, and efficiency constant. They don’t predict future prices. The electricity costs don’t include billing adjustments. Calculations use exact numbers, and the final totals are rounded to the nearest rupee.
10. Electric Scooter Vs Petrol Scooter: 1-year Expenditure Example
This calculation assumes 10,000 km in the first year. No tyre or battery replacement is budgeted during this period. This is a modelling assumption, not a guarantee that no replacement will be needed. The shared ownership-cost exclusions and calculation limitations apply.
| Cost component | Petrol example: Honda Activa 110 STD | Electric example: Ather 450X |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated purchase subtotal | ₹87,739 | ₹1,30,140 |
| Battery replacement — baseline assumption | ₹0 assumed | ₹0 assumed |
| Tyre replacements — none budgeted within 10,000 km | ₹0 | ₹0 |
| Routine maintenance budget — 1 year | ₹4,000 | ₹2,000 |
| Petrol or base electricity cost — 10,000 km | ₹21,728 | ₹1,885 |
| Estimated 1-year subtotal before excluded expenses | ₹1,13,467 | ₹1,34,025 |
The petrol example has a subtotal ₹20,558 lower in the first year. In this scenario, the electric example’s lower energy and maintenance expenses do not yet offset its higher purchase expenditure. The shared exclusions apply.
11. Electric Scooter Vs Petrol Scooter: 3-year Expenditure Example
This calculation assumes 10,000 km of riding per year, or 30,000 km over three years. It uses the purchase, maintenance, tyre and energy assumptions defined above. The shared ownership-cost exclusions and calculation limitations apply.
| Cost component | Petrol example: Honda Activa 110 STD | Electric example: Ather 450X |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated purchase subtotal | ₹87,739 | ₹1,30,140 |
| Battery replacement — baseline assumption | ₹0 assumed | ₹0 assumed |
| Tyre replacements — 1 pair budgeted over 30,000 km | ₹2,598 | ₹3,599 |
| Routine maintenance budget — 3 years | ₹12,000 | ₹6,000 |
| Petrol or base electricity cost — 30,000 km | ₹65,183 | ₹5,655 |
| Estimated 3-year subtotal before excluded expenses | ₹1,67,520 | ₹1,45,394 |
The electric example has a subtotal ₹22,126 lower over three years under these assumptions. The shared exclusions apply; no resale proceeds are deducted.
12. Electric Scooter Vs Petrol Scooter: 5-year Expenditure Example
This calculation assumes 10,000 km of riding per year, or 50,000 km over five years. It includes the estimated purchase subtotal, an illustrative maintenance budget, assumed tire replacements, and calculated energy expenses. Excluded expenses are explained below the comparison tables.
| Cost component | Petrol example: Honda Activa 110 STD | Electric example: Ather 450X |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated purchase subtotal | ₹87,739 | ₹1,30,140 |
| Battery replacement — baseline assumption | ₹0 assumed | ₹0 assumed |
| Tyre replacements — 2 pairs budgeted over 50,000 km | ₹5,196 | ₹7,198 |
| Routine maintenance budget — 5 years | ₹20,000 | ₹10,000 |
| Petrol or base electricity cost — 50,000 km | ₹1,08,638 | ₹9,425 |
| Estimated 5-year subtotal before excluded expenses | ₹2,21,573 | ₹1,56,763 |
Under these assumptions, the Ather 450X subtotal is ₹64,810 lower over five years. This is a difference between the listed subtotals, not a guaranteed saving after all ownership expenses.
What These Ownership Subtotals Include
- The purchase figures from Section 5: the Activa’s estimated subtotal and the Ather configurator’s displayed on-road estimate, including the respective tax or combined registration-related charges and initial insurance amounts shown there.
- The annual routine maintenance budgets defined in Section 8.
- Tyre replacement budgets based on one replacement pair every 20,000 km.
- Petrol calculated at ₹102.12 per litre and 47 km per litre.
- Electricity calculated at a ₹6.50 per kWh base-tariff scenario and assumed wall consumption of 2.9 kWh per 100 km.
The purchase subtotal is counted once. Road tax, base registration fees and the initial insurance premium are not added again in the ownership tables.
Expenses Not Included In These Subtotals
- Own-damage insurance renewals after the initial one-year cover, if that protection is continued.
- Applicable electricity billing adjustments, including surcharges, taxes and the effect of household consumption slabs or subsidies.
- Any separately applicable purchase-related charges not included in Section 5, such as smart-card, number-plate or hypothecation charges.
- Charger purchase, installation, public-charging fees and optional subscriptions or plans not already included in the purchase subtotal.
- Paid battery replacement, major component failures, accident repairs and other unscheduled repairs.
- Any separately payable tyre-fitting or related charges not included in the illustrative tyre prices.
- Loan interest and other finance charges, if applicable.
No resale proceeds are deducted. These figures therefore represent estimated expenditure before resale, not net ownership cost after selling the scooter.
Calculation Limitations
These estimates hold energy prices, efficiency, tyre prices and annual maintenance budgets constant. They do not predict future prices or guarantee actual expenditure. Confirm the selected variants, final Delhi purchase quotations, and all excluded expenses before treating the comparison as a complete ownership-cost assessment.
Energy expenses are calculated from unrounded inputs and rounded to the nearest rupee for display. Each ownership subtotal is the sum of the displayed cost rows.
What Does The Electric Vs Petrol Scooter Cost Comparison Show?
Under the assumptions used in this comparison, the Honda Activa 110 has a lower estimated expenditure subtotal in the first year. The Ather 450X has lower estimated subtotals over three and five years because its calculated energy and maintenance expenses offset its higher purchase subtotal over those periods.
| Ownership period | Petrol example: Honda Activa 110 STD subtotal | Electric example: Ather 450X subtotal | Lower subtotal in this scenario |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year / 10,000 km | ₹1,13,467 | ₹1,34,025 | Honda Activa 110 by ₹20,558 |
| 3 years / 30,000 km | ₹1,67,520 | ₹1,45,394 | Ather 450X by ₹22,126 |
| 5 years / 50,000 km | ₹2,21,573 | ₹1,56,763 | Ather 450X by ₹64,810 |
Lower Running Expenses Are Not The Same As Lower Total Expenditure
Running expenses are the costs incurred while using and maintaining the scooter. The expenditure subtotals above also include the initial purchase. Although the Ather has lower calculated energy and maintenance expenses in this scenario, those reductions do not fully recover its higher purchase subtotal within the first year.
What The Results Mean For Buyers
- For the first year, the Activa has the lower expenditure subtotal, including purchase, despite its higher calculated petrol expenses.
- Over three and five years, the Ather has the lower expenditure subtotal under the stated mileage, energy-price and maintenance assumptions.
- These results apply to 10,000 km of riding per year. They should not be presented as the outcome for every rider or every electric and petrol scooter.
- The break-even section below estimates recovery through energy savings alone. An exact comparison, including all ownership expenses, requires the final purchase charges and the timing of maintenance, insurance, and other applicable costs.
Important Conditions Behind The Comparison
The calculation uses petrol at ₹102.12 per litre, assumed petrol mileage of 47 km per litre, a base-electricity scenario of ₹6.50 per kWh and assumed wall consumption of 2.9 kWh per 100 km. Maintenance uses annual allowances; tyres use selected retail prices and an assumed replacement interval. No paid battery replacement is included in the baseline.
The figures exclude expenses identified in the ownership tables, including applicable electricity billing adjustments, own-damage insurance renewals after year one, unconfirmed purchase-related charges, finance costs and unscheduled repairs. No resale proceeds are deducted.
See these differences as estimated spending gaps based on the given assumptions, not as guaranteed savings. Your final purchase price, real-world usage, and any extra costs could change the outcome.
When Does The Electric Scooter Recover Its Higher Purchase Cost?
Using this comparison’s purchase subtotals and energy assumptions, the Ather 450X recovers its higher purchase expenditure through energy savings alone after approximately 21,400 km. At 10,000 km per year, that is about 2.14 years, or 26 months.
This is a simplified energy-only break-even estimate. It is not a complete ownership-cost break-even calculation because it excludes differences in maintenance, tyre expenses, insurance renewals and other additional costs.
1. Additional Purchase Expenditure
The estimated purchase subtotal is ₹1,30,140 for the Ather 450X and ₹87,739 for the Honda Activa 110 STD.
Additional purchase expenditure = ₹1,30,140 − ₹87,739 = ₹42,401.
These are the purchase subtotals defined earlier, not fully inclusive dealer quotations. Any additional purchase charges must be considered before using this estimate for a buying decision.
2. Calculated Energy Saving Per Kilometre
| Calculation | Result |
|---|---|
| Activa petrol cost: ₹102.12 per litre ÷ 47 km per litre | Approximately ₹2.1728 per km |
| Ather base electricity cost: 2.9 kWh per 100 km × ₹6.50 per kWh | ₹0.1885 per km |
| Calculated energy saving with the Ather | Approximately ₹1.9843 per km |
The electricity figure uses the domestic base-tariff scenario defined in Section 9. Applicable electricity billing adjustments and public-charging expenses are not included.
3. Energy-only Break-even Distance And Time
Energy-only break-even distance = additional purchase expenditure ÷ calculated energy saving per kilometre.
Using unrounded energy-cost values, ₹42,401 ÷ approximately ₹1.9843 per km gives approximately 21,369 km, rounded to 21,400 km for this guide.
At 10,000 km per year, the corresponding period is approximately 2.14 years, or 26 months. This assumes that the stated efficiency and energy prices remain unchanged.
4. Why Complete Ownership-cost Break-even May Differ
- The annual maintenance budgets are ₹4,000 for the Activa and ₹2,000 for the Ather. These illustrative allowances favour the Ather but are excluded from the energy-only calculation above.
- The tyre model includes replacement purchases at 20,000 km intervals. The two scooters have different assumed replacement-pair prices, so these expenses change the comparison at those distances.
- Own-damage insurance renewals, electricity billing adjustments, additional purchase charges and finance costs remain outside the listed subtotals. Differences between the scooters’ additional expenses can change the break-even point.
- No paid battery replacement is assumed in the baseline. Any replacement expense payable by the owner must be added if it occurs.
- No resale proceeds are deducted. A comparison after selling the scooters would require a separate resale scenario.
Maintenance costs are planned yearly, but tyre replacements are based on distance. For a more accurate calculation, track when each expense actually happens instead of spreading every cost evenly per kilometre.
How To Use This Result
Consider 21,400 km as the energy-only break-even distance for this specific example, not as a standard payback number for all electric scooters. Update the calculation with your actual purchase price difference, expected efficiency, and real charging costs.
The earlier ownership tables include the stated maintenance and tyre budgets and show the Ather with a lower subtotal at three years. They do not establish the exact date at which all applicable ownership expenditure becomes equal.
How Does Monthly Riding Distance Change The Comparison?
The main ownership tables assume 10,000 km per year. The scenarios below show how lower or higher usage changes annual energy expenses and the time needed to recover the Ather’s higher purchase subtotal through energy savings alone.
All three scenarios use petrol at ₹102.12 per litre, Activa mileage of 47 km per litre, electricity at a base-tariff scenario of ₹6.50 per kWh, and Ather wall-energy consumption of 2.9 kWh per 100 km. The additional purchase expenditure remains ₹42,401.
| Usage scenario | Monthly distance | Annual distance | Activa annual petrol cost | Ather annual base electricity cost | Annual energy-cost difference | Energy-only break-even time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low usage | 300 km | 3,600 km | ₹7,822 | ₹679 | ₹7,143 | Approximately 5.9 years |
| Moderate usage | 600 km | 7,200 km | ₹15,644 | ₹1,357 | ₹14,287 | Approximately 3.0 years |
| Higher usage | 1,000 km | 12,000 km | ₹26,073 | ₹2,262 | ₹23,811 | Approximately 1.8 years |
Amounts are calculated from unrounded inputs and rounded independently to the nearest rupee. As a result, subtracting the displayed rounded costs may differ by ₹1 from the displayed energy-cost difference.
What These Scenarios Mean
- At 300 km per month, energy-only recovery takes approximately 5.9 years. If you intend to sell sooner, this scenario does not recover the additional purchase expenditure through energy savings alone within your ownership period.
- At 600 km per month, energy-only recovery takes approximately 3.0 years.
- At 1,000 km per month, energy-only recovery takes approximately 1.8 years because the assumed energy-cost difference accumulates more quickly.
The energy-only break-even distance stays around 21,400 km in all three scenarios because the purchase price difference and energy cost per kilometre don’t change. How far you ride each month only affects how quickly you reach that distance.
Calculation Method
- Annual distance = monthly distance × 12.
- Annual petrol cost = annual distance ÷ 47 × ₹102.12.
- Annual base electricity cost = annual distance ÷ 100 × 2.9 × ₹6.50.
- Annual energy-cost difference = annual petrol cost − annual base electricity cost.
- Energy-only break-even time in years = ₹42,401 ÷ annual energy-cost difference.
Limits Of This Usage Comparison
These are energy-only scenarios, not complete ownership-cost comparisons. They exclude maintenance, tyres, insurance renewals, applicable electricity billing adjustments, additional purchase charges, finance costs and unscheduled repairs. No resale proceeds are deducted.
Do not transfer the main tables’ maintenance totals or tyre-replacement counts directly to these scenarios. A separate ownership calculation must account for the service schedule, elapsed time, accumulated distance and timing of replacement purchases.
These scenarios keep energy prices and efficiency the same throughout. They don’t predict future prices, especially over longer periods for low usage. Before deciding, use your own expected riding distance and energy costs in the calculation.
How Different Efficiency Assumptions Change The Result
The scenarios below hold annual distance at 10,000 km, petrol at ₹102.12 per litre, base electricity at ₹6.50 per kWh and additional purchase expenditure at ₹42,401. Each alternative changes one efficiency input only. The alternative values are hypothetical sensitivity tests, not measured performance or an established real-world range.
| Scenario | Activa km/litre | Ather wall kWh/100 km | Annual petrol cost | Annual base electricity cost | Annual energy-cost difference | Energy-only break-even distance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baseline | 47 | 2.9 | ₹21,728 | ₹1,885 | ₹19,843 | 21,369 km |
| Lower petrol efficiency — hypothetical | 40 | 2.9 | ₹25,530 | ₹1,885 | ₹23,645 | 17,932 km |
| Higher petrol efficiency — hypothetical | 55 | 2.9 | ₹18,567 | ₹1,885 | ₹16,682 | 25,417 km |
| Higher electricity consumption — hypothetical | 47 | 3.5 | ₹21,728 | ₹2,275 | ₹19,453 | 21,797 km |
Annual petrol cost = 10,000 ÷ petrol efficiency × ₹102.12. Annual base electricity cost = 10,000 ÷ 100 × wall consumption × ₹6.50. Break-even distance = ₹42,401 ÷ energy-cost difference per kilometre. Calculations use unrounded inputs; displayed amounts are independently rounded. Wall consumption includes charging losses; do not add them again.
Higher petrol efficiency reduces the calculated energy-cost advantage of the Ather and lengthens energy-only recovery; higher electricity consumption has the same directional effect. These scenarios exclude maintenance differences, tyres and the shared ownership-cost exclusions. They do not change the baseline ownership tables.
Electric Or Petrol Scooter: Which Fits Your Budget And Usage?
Compare these costs along with your own budget, charging setup, travel needs, and local service options. The results above are specific to the Honda Activa 110 and Ather 450X with the given assumptions—they don’t pick a universal winner for all petrol and electric scooters.
Consider The Honda Activa 110 If:
- A lower initial purchase expense is your main priority. The Activa has the lower estimated purchase subtotal in this comparison.
- You are comparing expenditure over the first year. At 10,000 km, the Activa’s estimated subtotal is ₹20,558 lower under the stated assumptions.
- You do not have a dependable home or workplace charging arrangement and have not confirmed a suitable public-charging alternative.
- Your journeys frequently change at short notice, and the selected electric scooter’s verified usable range and available charging stops would not meet your requirements.
Consider The Ather 450x If:
- You have dependable charging access and have confirmed parking permission, charger suitability and any installation costs.
- The selected battery variant’s verified usable range provides a suitable margin for your regular journeys and occasional detours.
- You can accommodate the higher estimated purchase subtotal and expect to retain the scooter long enough to assess the longer-term expenditure difference.
- Your usage is reasonably close to this calculation’s assumptions. At 10,000 km per year, the Ather has lower estimated three-year and five-year subtotals, before excluded expenses.
Check These Details Before Buying Either Scooter
| Decision factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Exact variant and final purchase price | Obtain a dated, itemised quotation showing the selected variant, included equipment, insurance, taxes, fees and any incentive already applied. |
| Regular and occasional journeys | List daily distance, longer trips, detours and opportunities to refuel or charge. Do not rely only on an advertised range figure. |
| Charging arrangements | For the electric option, confirm access, permissions, installation requirements, applicable electricity charges and a backup arrangement. |
| Service and repair support | Check nearby authorised service facilities, parts availability, warranty terms and how you would manage time without the scooter. |
| Expected ownership period | Compare expenditure over the period you actually intend to keep the scooter, using your expected annual distance. |
| Expenses outside the calculation | Include applicable insurance renewals, charging adjustments, finance costs, optional plans and other excluded expenses before making a final decision. |
In this example, the Activa costs less in the first year, but the Ather comes out ahead over three and five years. These results depend on the prices, efficiency, and budgets used here. Your own quotes, usage, and extra costs could lead to a different result.
No resale proceeds are deducted, and no separate purchase subsidy is assumed. Assess resale expectations and environmental considerations separately rather than treating either as a guaranteed financial advantage.
Sources And Calculation Method
This article separates official website prices, published rules, dated price reporting and illustrative calculation assumptions. A source for one input should not be interpreted as verification of every figure in the comparison.
| Input | Basis used | Status or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Honda purchase-price input | Official Honda website: Activa 110 STD at ₹76,358 ex-showroom Delhi. | Recorded in October 2026; not a complete on-road quotation. |
| Ather purchase-price input | Configurator: effective ex-showroom ₹1,22,046; displayed on-road estimate ₹1,30,140 for New Delhi, 126-km range option, Cosmic Black. | Includes approximate insurance ₹7,564 and a combined ₹530 road-tax-and-registration line. Three-year battery warranty marked as included. Battery capacity, charger inclusion, and policy details are not shown. |
| Registration | Parivahan fee schedule and the separate battery-operated-vehicle exemption notification. | Other applicable charges must be checked separately. |
| Delhi road tax | Activa: estimated 6% tax. Ather: ₹530 combined road tax and registration line included in the configurator. | The ₹530 is not itemised and must not be described entirely as road tax or as the statutory registration fee. Confirm the final assessment. |
| Initial insurance premiums | ₹6,500 for the Activa and ₹7,564 for the Ather. | Activa: illustrative budget. Ather: approximate configurator premium. Equivalent coverage is assumed for modelling, not confirmed by the screenshot. |
| Petrol price | ₹102.12 per litre, reported for Delhi on 28 October 2026. | Held constant for calculation; not a future-price forecast. |
| Electricity price | ₹6.50 per kWh base-energy scenario, corresponding to the 401–800-unit monthly domestic slab listed by BillUnits. | Secondary-source reference, not an official tariff notification. The calculation assumes all charging units are priced at this base rate and excludes applicable billing adjustments. Confirm the applicable schedule and effective date with the distribution company. |
| Efficiency | 47 km per litre for the Activa and 2.9 kWh per 100 km at the wall for the Ather. | Illustrative assumptions, not independently verified test results. |
| Routine maintenance | Annual allowances of ₹4,000 for the Activa and ₹2,000 for the Ather at 10,000 km per year, informed by Ride N Repair and Ather service guides. | Not verified annual quotations. The Activa annual reference refers to a different model and usage; Ather publishes starting labour and indicative parts prices. Confirm coverage of scheduled replacements, including work due at 50,000 km. |
| Tyres | Selected retail tyre-pair prices: Activa ₹2,598; Ather ₹3,599. Replacement pairs counted at each completed 20,000 km interval. | Prices exclude separately payable fitting and related charges. Replacement timing is a modelling assumption, not a verified tyre-life figure. |
| Battery replacement | No paid replacement included in the baseline. | An assumption, not a guarantee of battery life or zero replacement expense. |
| Resale | No sale proceeds deducted. | Results show expenditure before resale, not net cost after selling. |
How The Ownership Subtotals Are Calculated
Estimated expenditure subtotal = estimated purchase subtotal + budgeted maintenance + budgeted tyre replacements + calculated petrol or base electricity expenses.
The purchase subtotal is included once. Its listed road tax, base registration fee and initial insurance premium are not added again. The expenses identified as excluded in the ownership section remain additional.
How The Break-even Scenarios Are Calculated
Energy-only break-even distance = additional purchase expenditure ÷ energy-cost difference per kilometre. Break-even time = that distance ÷ assumed annual riding distance.
These energy-only results exclude maintenance differences, tyre purchases, insurance renewals and other additional expenses. They must not be described as complete ownership-cost payback periods.
Rounding And Updates
Calculations use unrounded inputs where available. Displayed currency amounts are generally rounded to the nearest rupee. Ownership subtotals are the sums of the displayed rows; independently rounded figures may differ slightly from calculations performed entirely with unrounded values.
The price and energy inputs in this version were recorded for October 2026. Review the source dates, selected variants, tariff conditions and applicable rules whenever the article is updated. Do not change the checked date without checking the underlying inputs.

excellent comparison.and very good information.
Overall operating cost is less for petrol vehicle than electrical scooter.
Thank you for the feedback, sir. This is what fuels us to do more and perform more
hi Hiran narayan
good morning.Excellent write up.
One small doubt ,do we have replce battery on electric bike for 5 years?
After 5 years it still runs ,albeit with reduced range, pls correct me,if I am wrong
There is surely increased risk of complaints and range gets reduced drastically. Its better to get in touch with dealers or manufacturer to get the exact information. Also we think there are reduced rates for old battery exchange which differs among companies. So please do checkout the same
