OVERVIEW

Performance and Engine

The V-Strom 800DE’s new 776cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine delivers 84.3hp and 78 Nm of torque, featuring a 270-degree crank for smooth torque delivery and manageability, even at a kerb weight of 232 kg. The engine performs best on widely available 95-octane fuel.

A 6-speed transmission and bi-directional quickshifter enable clutchless shifting, improving comfort and reducing fatigue. The ride-by-wire throttle and S.I.R.S. offer three riding modes, adjustable traction control, and two ABS settings.

The top speed is approximately 210 km/h, with comfortable highway cruising speeds of up to 130 km/h. Some vibration and heat may occur above typical cruising speeds, but it’s manageable for everyday use.

Mileage and Fuel Efficiency

The V-Strom 800DE offers a fuel efficiency of 22.7 kmpl, as certified by ARAI. With a 20-litre fuel tank, it provides a range of over 450 km on highways.

Real-world mileage ranges from 20 to 24 km/l, depending on riding style and conditions, with 20–22 km/l being common in mixed use and 24 km/l possible during steady touring.

Build Quality

The V-Strom 800DE is well-built, starting with a strong steel frame and a lightweight aluminium swingarm. These parts are designed to withstand the rigours of city roads and rougher country routes. The paint appears to be of high quality, the plastic parts fit well, and the wiring is tidy, showcasing Suzuki’s meticulous artistry.

Owners in India mention its solid feel and notable fit and finish, stating these aspects often surpass those of competitors. Some, however, note that the plastic knuckle guards and partially plastic engine bashplate might be less robust for extreme off-road use.

Handling

The V-Strom 800DE’s handling is tuned for Indian roads. Key chassis features and Showa suspension with 220 mm travel provide stability and absorb rough terrain, whether riding solo or with a passenger and luggage.

Riders like how balanced and steady the bike feels on different roads. You can adjust the suspension to suit your needs or the load you’re carrying. Even though it weighs 232 kg and has a tall seat, it’s still easy to handle with a few suspension tweaks. The wire-spoke wheels help absorb bumps and maintain a stable ride.

Comfort

Comfort is a highlight, thanks to an upright position, wide handlebars, plush, slim-front seat, and additional ergonomic touches like adjustable windscreen and standard knuckle guards.

Suspension comfort is excellent, complemented by a cushiony saddle and compliant ride quality, minimising fatigue even on long journeys across India’s varying road conditions. Comfort also extends to electronic aids such as ride modes, traction control, TFT display, and practical USB charging convenience.

Styling

The V-Strom 800DE fuses classic V-Strom traits with a modern aesthetic. Its signature high-set beak is reengineered for superior off-road handling. The front features prominent, vertically stacked hexagonal LED headlights, providing strong illumination and an assertive presence.

Additional LEDs and a compact, height-adjustable windscreen provide a high-tech look, aiding aerodynamics and wind protection.
A muscular silhouette, featuring a robust tank, visible frame components, wire-spoked wheels, a luggage rack, grab rails, and knuckle guards, strikes a balance between style and utility.

Colour Options and Variants

Suzuki offers the V-Strom 800DE in distinctive India-focused colours: Champion Yellow, Pearl Tech White, and Glass Sparkle Black.

  1. Champion Yellow
  2. Pearl Tech White
  3. Glass Sparkle Black

These colour choices follow current adventure bike trends, offering a mix of bright and premium-looking options.

The V-Strom 800DE is available in a single, fully loaded variant in India, emphasising quality and capability over multiple trims. Features include:

  1. Advanced electronic suite including ride modes, traction control, two-mode ABS with rear ABS off option.
  2. Bi-directional quickshifter
  3. LED lighting
  4. Full-colour 5-inch TFT screen
  5. Long-travel suspension
  6. Wire-spoke tubeless wheels
  7. The 20-litre fuel tank tailored for Indian touring needs.

The focus on a single, fully equipped variant enables Suzuki to target competitive pricing and ensure support for features required for both city and adventure conditions in India.

Value for Money and Pricing

Suzuki has introduced the V-Strom 800DE in India at an ex-showroom price of ₹ 11,00,763, placing it competitively below several premium rivals.

At this price, the V-Strom 800DE’s primary advantages for adventure riders are its powerful 776cc parallel-twin engine, comprehensive advanced electronics, and ride-enhancing features, including multiple ride modes, traction control, a bi-directional quickshifter, and full LED lighting. These capabilities, paired with Suzuki’s reputation for reliability and comfort, offer a strong value proposition in long touring and mixed-terrain use in India.

Lower service costs than many European rivals are a plus. However, Suzuki’s 6,000 km or six-month service interval may raise ownership costs where big-bike service centres are limited.

In the mid-size adventure bike segment, the main competitors to the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE are:

  1. Honda XL750 Transalp
  2. BMW F 850 GS
  3. Triumph Tiger Sport 660
  4. Kawasaki Versys 650

The Suzuki V-Strom is positioned between affordability and capability, offering features that challenge premium rivals while maintaining an attractive price for adventure riders in India.

VERDICT

The Suzuki V-Strom 800DE is a strong all-rounder and a leading middleweight adventure motorcycle for Indian riders. Its key advantages are a smooth and powerful engine, advanced electronics, excellent build quality, and balanced comfort, all of which make it ideal for those wanting to stretch their touring limits in India without compromising reliability or essential features.

The bike isn’t perfect. It’s a bit heavy, has tube tires, and a tall seat. Still, it offers a premium experience for the price. Riders seeking a reliable and versatile adventure bike will find the Suzuki to be a strong option. If you plan to ride off-road frequently, consider adjusting the suspension and upgrading the tires for optimal performance.

PROS

  • The strong, smooth 776cc engine delivers punchy, low-vibration performance, making it ideal for touring and off-road use.
  • Advanced electronics include ride modes, bi-directional quickshifter, switchable ABS, and traction control with Gravel mode, enhancing confidence in varied conditions.
  • The long-travel Showa suspension (220mm) effectively absorbs shocks on Indian roads and trails.
  • A sturdy steel frame, well-finished bodywork, wire-spoked tubeless wheels, LED lighting, and an adjustable windscreen reflect a practical design and build quality.
  • An upright riding position, wide handlebars, and plush seats help reduce fatigue on highways and rough streets.
  • Priced at ₹10.3 lakh (ex-showroom), this vehicle offers advanced features and reliability, providing substantial value in its segment.

CONS

  • At 232 kg, the bike can feel heavy, especially for shorter or less experienced riders in city conditions.
  • Tube-type tyres, although good off-road, are more prone to punctures and require extra care on other roads.
  • The seat height (855 mm) may be challenging for shorter riders in terms of comfort and confidence in traffic.
  • The absence of cruise control and four-piston front brake callipers is a notable convenience missed in this segment.
  • Some riders report experiencing engine heat after prolonged periods of traffic, which can compromise comfort in hot conditions.
  • Factory suspension may be too soft for aggressive off-road or heavy loads, needing retuning.

I bought a 2023 Suzuki 800de

19 March, 2025

i own a Honda Vtx 1800 and Harley Electra glide ultra classic. I bought the 800de about a year ago and am having fun on it. It’s a quick bike and rides smoother then the Honda and as smooth if not smoother than the Harley. For overall horsepower the other two will beat it, but it is quick and I have no problem hanging with hi-way traffic. I was after the Goldwing but let my mech. ad the shop owner talk me into a adv. bike after researching a trip to Alaska… and I have no complaints.
