ABOUT HUSQVARNA BIKES
Husqvarna Motorcycles originated in Sweden in 1689 as a manufacturer of weapons and began producing motorcycles in 1903. Today, it is one of the world’s oldest and most respected motorcycle brands. In late 2019, Husqvarna brought its Svartpilen and Vitpilen series to India, focusing on premium lifestyle and performance.
History and Growth
Husqvarna transitioned from manufacturing muskets to producing motorcycles in Sweden during the early 1900s. The brand gained worldwide recognition for its off-road racing success, winning several world championships in the 1960s and 1970s.
After changing owners a few times, Husqvarna was bought by KTM (now Pierer Mobility AG) in 2013. In India, Husqvarna entered the market through a partnership between Bajaj Auto and KTM, which collaborated to introduce Husqvarna models to Indian customers.
Key Milestones and Developments
- 1903: Husqvarna produced its first motorcycle, a motorised bicycle.
- 1960s–1970s: Husqvarna achieved success in off-road racing, winning 14 Motocross World Championships and 24 Enduro European Championships.
- 2013: KTM acquired Husqvarna Motorcycles and introduced new models while expanding globally.
- 2019: Husqvarna officially launched in India with the Svartpilen 250 and Vitpilen 250, manufactured at Bajaj’s Chakan plant.
- 2020–2025: Husqvarna expanded its India lineup with 401cc models and added India-specific modifications, including new colour options and features.
Manufacturing Facilities
Husqvarna motorcycles sold in India are made at Bajaj Auto’s Chakan plant in Pune, Maharashtra. This plant also manufactures KTM motorcycles, so both brands share platforms and key components, such as the 249cc and 373cc engines used in Husqvarna models.
The Chakan plant has increased its capacity to meet the growing demand for KTM and Husqvarna motorcycles. Each year, production is expected to go beyond 200,000 units.
Market Position and Achievements
Husqvarna has made a name for itself in India’s premium motorcycle market, attracting young riders who value style and performance. Its motorcycles are sold through KTM dealerships and use Bajaj’s distribution network.
The Svartpilen and Vitpilen series from Husqvarna are renowned for their Scandinavian design, ease of handling, and competitive pricing. Working with KTM and Bajaj has also helped Husqvarna establish trust and expand its presence in the Indian market.
Future Plans
Husqvarna aims to expand its range in India by introducing additional models and versions that cater to local preferences. Over the next few years, the brand will introduce new products, including various engine options and features designed explicitly for Indian riders.
Husqvarna is also investing in electric vehicles. After launching electric models like the EE 5 mini-crosser worldwide, the company is now looking at the Indian market for future electric launches, with test runs and possible releases expected soon.
Husqvarna anticipates introducing these new ideas to India within the next few years. The company aims to grow in India’s premium and lifestyle motorcycle markets by leveraging its heritage and design to attract new riders, while continuing to invest in new models and technology.
