TVS APACHE RTR160 TEST RIDE & REVIEW

OLD DESIGN REFRESHED

Overall design of the apache RTR160 has not undergone major changes but there are some minor ones. Single color tone instead of dual color along with new decals, new faux carbon fibre finish on some plastic bits are the some among the updates. Engine has got now matte color which is also a good addition. The sticker works on the alloys adds a premium touch to the more than old decade design.

From the middle portion to bottom in side profile almost everything has got matte or black finish. Shape of rear view mirrors and rear tail lamps are not that refreshing and feels outdated. The exhaust has got some finishing updates to sync with new styling changes. The fit and finish of the panels are decent enough and same is the case for switch gear and longevity of parts which needs lot more improvement.

REFINED & SMOOTH

Engine develops peak power of 15.12PS @ 8500rpm and peak torque of 13.03Nm @ 6500rpm which is a drop of 1PS of power and a gain of 1Nm of torque in comparison to older engine. Most importantly, the bore-stroke ratio has changed – a narrower bore and a longer stroke for the 160. This bike comes with SI which helps in faster and better combustion, excellent power delivery and superb fuel economy.

Engine response throughout entire rev range is immediate and almost urgent. The torque figures are good and noticeable. Although there is a noticeable drop in acceleration in the high rev range. In the refinement department, the engine has done has undergone huge improvement. This mill comes mated with a 5 speed gearbox and a low drag clutch which results in better and precise gearshifts. The mileage figures stands around in 60km/l in highways and 60km/l in cities.

OUTDATED SUSPENSION SETUP

apache RTR160 houses 5 way adjustable Monotube Inverted Gas-filled shox with spring aid suspension at the rear and 105mm Telescopic Forks with Hydraulic Dampers at the front. The double down tube type frame seems to be wobbly while riding and takes away confidence from the rider. The well sorted twin gas charged rear shocks and front telescopes do a decent job of absorbing potholes and bumpy roads, but not up to challenging road surfaces. In corners, overall suspension setup is not providing enough confidence to lean and attack.

Clip-on handlebars are a nice asset which makes city riding more comfy but slightly uncomfortable for long rides. Kerb weight of 137 kgs makes it a bit tough to ride in cities while resolving stability issues. The 17 inch tubeless tyres at front and the rear performs well on various road surfaces including wet and slippery conditions. Braking duties are done by 270mm dia front disc brake and 130mm dia drum brake which provides decent braking. Motorcycle saddle is wide, plough and comfortable with pillion seat slightly elevated above the rider saddle.

LOW ON FEATURES

Powerful Air Cooled engine, tubeless tyres, Monotube Inverted Gas-filled shox rear suspension, wolf eyed headlamps etc are some of the notable features which is a huge letdown when compared to other 160cc motorcycles which has got more sophisticated features with almost same price tag.

TVS APACHE RTR160 VERDICT

apache RTR160 has got much needed refreshed looks and some major updates in the engine department. They had stick on to the basics and does not want to tamper which might be good among die hard apache fans but not for everyone. Low set of features, ageing design, outdated frame and build quality issues are the some which makes apache 160 down. So my suggestion would be to look out for apache models if you have extra penny in the pocket.
